Amanda Barr

Amanda Barr is an artist and maker based in Chapel Hill and Carolina Beach, NC. Originally from Ashland, OR she graduated from RISD in 1996 with a degree in printmaking. She works with a variety of materials, often bending the line between sculptural and functional forms, using clay, textiles, sound, video and live performance. Amanda also supports the arts in her community by regularly hosting art shows and creative events and is the co-founder of Obracadobra, an artist residency program in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Q: What is your favorite aspect of the creative process that goes into making your products?

A: Having fun and feeling free while being calm and focused on making something that can spread joy to others.

Q: What would you want to tell everyone that owns one of your creations?

A: Embrace the individuality of it because you can always purchase mass produced objects - this is one of a kind and meant to be with you.

Q: What are you looking at (art), reading (books), listening to (podcasts, music)?

A: Scientology escape stories, Beyond Belief, This is Actually Happening, Haiku, Old Hollywood, Wangechi Mutu, Robert Gober, Gordon Lightfoot, mysterious synthesizer, Vivaldi, Thelonious Monk- Caravan

Q: What’s your favorite season and why?

A: No question, spring, although I really get happy every season with traditional vibes- after a long season of cozy and chilling things are ready to be their fresh new growth selves/ like happy fern fronds, crocuses hyacinth and bright spring chartreuse baby leaves and perfectly warm weather.
