Libby Hruska

Libby Hruska is a longtime art book editor and part-time potter who lives and works in Berkeley, California. She has been on staff at both MoMA and the Whitney in New York, and currently works as a freelance editor for museums around the country. Being immersed in the visual languages of so many artists has helped to hone her own ideas of what is beautiful and interesting. She makes functional pottery that she hopes people will use regularly, adding to the pleasure of everyday moments.

Q & A with Libby Hruska

Q: What is your favorite aspect of the creative process that goes into making your products?

A: I love refining shapes until they feel just right. I’ve been tweaking my mugs, plates, and drinking glasses for years! I feel like I have now arrived at some core pieces that also feel special and unique.

Q: What makes your brand special to you?

A: That I get to make things I love to look at and use, and that other people want to use them too. It's been interesting to me that even though my pottery isn't one obvious style—from bright stripy plates to sturdy mugs to anchovy dishes!—I seem to gravitate to making things with a remarkably similar point of view: simple and solid and (I hope) elegant and joyful.

Q: What’s one thing you’d want people to remember about your company/brand?

A: When you buy something from a small maker, it has a big impact. Good design can be found lots of places these days, but there is still something special—maybe even necessary—about humans making things. Not everything in our homes can be handmade, but I hope we don’t collectively lose our appreciation for thoughtfully crafted pieces.

Q: What are you looking at (art), reading (books), listening to (podcasts, music)?

A: I’m very drawn to portraiture—capturing something essential about another human being is an incredible gift. I recently went to see the Amy Sherald exhibition at SFMOMA. Sherald is of course well known for her stunning portrait of Michelle Obama, but I found myself equally captivated by every work in the show.
